Thoughts Under the Umbrella

1 Peter 4:11 “ If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God.”

The day of my daughter’s memorial service, we were surrounded by family and friends; it was so comforting to feel the love they poured out on us.  One by one they came to express their love for us and for our daughter . Out of the corner of my eye I noticed a women waiting patiently, watching as each person came and went.  I knew of her but had never really talked to her.  The reason I knew of her was because she too had lost a daughter years ago when our children were younger.  I remember looking into her face as she approached me and I knew she understood.  She hugged me tightly and with tears in her eyes she said, “I had to be here today to tell you one thing, you will survive.”  I did not know how or if I would survive, but I would hear her words often when I felt I could not go on.  I know she was sent to me from the Lord.  Just her presence gave me a small sign of hope that if she found a way to live again, I too might be able to find a new life.  I know it was not easy for her to come to my daughter’s memorial, but I also know she could not stay away.  She knew I needed to hear those words.  It is because of her example I know what my support to a newly bereaved mom can do.  Who better to help a bereaved mom but a bereaved mom?  God does not comfort us just to make us feel better.  We are comforted so we can comfort others.

Lord, may we speak Your words of comfort to those who need comforting.
