Thoughts Under the Umbrella

Lamentations 3:32-33 “ Though He brings grief, He will show compassion, so great is His unfailing love.  For He does not willingly bring affliction or grief to the children of men.”

Parents who have never experienced the loss of a child will look at us who have gone through this tragedy and say we are living their worst nightmare.  For us who have lost one child, those parents who have had to say goodbye to more than one child becomes our worst nightmare.  As I write this devotional, a dear friend of mine is watching her second son cling to life another day. It is hard to not see this as giving this mom more pain than anyone should have to bear.  It almost seems cruel.  When we say goodbye to one child, the pain is unbearable.  I cannot imagine having to walk this journey again.  Once again I am reminded that our children’s lives are separate from ours.  Each child we are given, whether we have one or ten, has a story different from us.  Their days are numbered, just like ours.  Some have stories longer than ours and some of their stories end before ours.  These children are given to us not as an accident.  He picked us out and gave us this specific child with this specific story.  He knew we would be the best mother for this child.  God never does anything without a purpose.  That is how we can know that He does not willingly bring affliction on us.  I am so thankful that we have the promise from the God of the Bible that tells us we will have grief, but in our time of grief, He will show us compassion.  He loves us and does not willingly bring affliction on us.

Lord, I pray for my dear friend and her son.  I pray for all moms whose children’s stories ended before theirs.
