Thoughts Under the Umbrella

Psalm 39:5  “You have made my days a mere handbreath; the span of my years is as nothing before you.  Each man’s life is but a breath.”

As I was reading the daily newspaper I noticed every so often there would be a little three inch by one inch story.  The story was written with a tiny headline and the story that followed was written in even smaller black print.  The caption would read something like this: “28 year old man killed as he lost control of his motorcycle.”  I then turned to another page where there was a little write-up about a toddler drowning in a pool, and a 58 year old woman hit by a car.  No name was mentioned.  Each of these stories to the newspaper writer only deserved a little space in their paper.  The stories also told only of how their life was cut short.  The articles told nothing about the lives that were being lived before this.  I thought about each of these stories.  We who have lost a child now understand that behind each one of these little articles is a mother with a broken heart.  You might have been a mom whose loss was condensed to a little article in the local newspaper.  How much more we could have shared about our child.  Our child was much more than their death.  There was a story being told well before this little three by one inch article.  We each could fill the entire newspaper with big bold front headlines about this child we loved with their names included.  We know that our child’s story lives on.  It did not end with a little write-up in the newspaper.  They live on in our hearts and in our memories each day we live a full and joyful life.  We also have the promise of our loving God that our lives, no matter how short, do matter.  We will see that played out one day when we enter into those pearly gates.

Lord, You know the number of our days and each matters, however long it is lived.  It matters to us and most important, its matters to You.
