1 Samuel 17:37 “The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”
Lions and tigers and bears – oh my! David was not afraid of facing the giant Philistine because He knew God had saved him from difficult situations before. Sometimes our problems can seem as frightening as being in the grasp of a wild animal. This seems especially true in those early morning hours when we find ourselves tossing and turning with “stinkin’ thinkin’.” The thoughts that play in our head seem to cast a giant shadow on the wall. For some reason, our list of worries grows in the night. There is a quote that expresses what worry says about our faith. “You can tell the size of your God by looking at the size of your worry list. The longer the list, the smaller your God.” I don’t know about you, but my worry list in the middle of the night looks as big as the giant Philistine. Just like David, we need to remind ourselves what God has rescued us from. I am sure we have not been rescued from the paw of a lion or bear, but many things that He has rescued us from could have caused us much more harm than any wild animal. So watch out all you scary thoughts that keep us awake at night. We have a God that is bigger and stronger than any shadows on the wall.
Lord, You are so much bigger and stronger than those shadows on the wall. Help us to make our worry list smaller, so we can make You larger.
