Plugging In

Psalm 119:105  “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”

Every morning when I get up, one of the first things I do is plug in my cell phone. My phone has become a very important part of my life because it keeps me connected all day long to the ones that I love. I am also able to connect to the internet, the super information highway, and with a click of a finger I can get directions to where I want to go or find out where and what time a movie is playing. I have come to a place in my life where I have my cell phone with me always. I put it on my desk at work; I have it on my bedside at night, and I when I go out, many times I’ll just have it in my hand. One of the greatest things about my cell phone is the flashlight. There are many times I need to go outside at night, or we are in a dim restaurant and I can use the flashlight on my phone to light my path or to read the menu.

So what would happen if I didn’t plug my phone into the outlet every morning? The battery would go dead and I wouldn’t be able to use it. Can you imagine what our lives would be like if we ourselves plugged in to the greatest power source in the universe?  How many times do we go for days without praying and not even acknowledging our Creator? Psalm 147:5 says, “Great is our Lord and mighty in power; His understanding has no limit.”  What would happen if we prayed and meditated on Him, on His precepts, and on His Word all day long? What if we were to meditate on His wonders when our soul became weary and we started losing our strength? A cell phone relies on its battery to get it through the day until it can be plugged in to an outlet and if we don’t plug it in, it will lose energy and die. We as human beings were not meant to live independently without plugging into our power source each and every day; we will wither up and die spiritually without the daily watering of our souls and without the energy and power only He can provide.

What if we looked to Him each and every moment of our day like we do our cell phones for our information and for wisdom? Psalm 121:1-2 says, “I lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.” We have the greatest power source at our fingertips and we’ve limited ourselves by learning to rely only on man’s technology moment by moment. When I am burdened, when I am in despair, when I go through difficulties and challenges, when the storm is raging around me and when I am at my lowest point, it will do me no good to reach for my cell phone. His Word has become a lamp for my feet and only He can show me where to go, what to say and what to do when the world closes in and I find myself lost in the chaos of it all. When I stop and pray and meditate on Him, when I worship and praise Him in the midst of the darkness, He shines His light into my situation and suddenly I can see clearly the path He has chosen for me to take.
