A Place of Safe Keeping
Exodus 31: 18 “When the Lord finished speaking with Moses on Mount Sinai, He gave him two stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant, ‘written by the finger of God.’”
The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States and The Bill of Rights -- all are kept in a safe and public place. These original papers are kept on the upper level of the National Archives Museum. The Rotunda for the Charters of Freedom was designed by John Russell Pope. The ornate rotunda has tall, soaring dome ceilings. It also features two murals by Barry Faulkner. It is a shrine to our American democracy. The importance of these documents cannot be overstated. It has kept this country on track for the last 246 years.
There was another document whose place of safe keeping cannot be seen physically. Moses came down from the mountain after a visit with God carrying two stone tablets. It was a covenant that would help us stay on the straight and narrow. The Bible tells us these tablets were God’s work: the words on them were written by God Himself. It even tells us that they were written by the finger of God. Wow! I wonder how good God’s penmanship was? Were the ten commandments written in beautiful calligraphy or maybe, were they chiseled out of stone? My guess is, He is God so He probably pointed His finger and voila! Words appeared. Whatever God used, these ten commandments helped produce all the rules and laws we need to live a life stamped by the Lord’s approval.
So where do we keep these words God wrote with His finger? Psalm 119:11 says we have hidden His word in our hearts that we will not sin against Him. As we learn His decrees and obey His instructions, that is where our happiness can be found. The physical tablets that were given to Moses are not tucked away is some rotunda. We do not have to travel far to observe them. We all know someone who lives their life according to the Word of God. This tablet is alive and well in the hearts of those who surround us. The Lord has individually used His finger to write on our hearts that we are His child. We are His shrine to the author of the stone tablets. The importance of these tablets cannot be overstated. It will keep us on the straight and narrow and also speak volumes of the Author.
Lord, You have written Your Word on our hearts with Your finger. May we be a beautiful rotunda for others to see.
