Galatians 5:15 “If you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.”
Technology has changed the way we communicate. It has made a very large universe suddenly become smaller in many ways. We can reach out and touch someone across the world in a blink of an eye. That touch can be a touch of kindness and encouragement or it can be a thoughtless unfeeling punch that can bring us to our knees. In this time of political correctness, I have noticed in the world of social media sometimes that is where the most cruelty comes into play. Words are spoken that probably would never be uttered in a face to face conversation. It often gives others a freedom to say whatever is on their mind without thinking of the repercussions that can wreak havoc on another person. Many times comments are made by others that have no knowledge of the person or events they are commenting on. They also do not see the pieces of lives and hearts that are destroyed by these off-handed comments. I know of a mother who lost her son in a terrible accident. Her son was killed as were a mother and another child. Her son was blamed for the accident even though after investigating the accident, the cause was inconclusive. The newspaper was full of comments about her precious son. She also had to read comments that said her son deserved to die. What good can come from such hurtful comments? Each person involved in this accident had broken hearts. All of the hurtful comments can only do one thing. It adds to the pain of these grieving families. When it comes to the loss of a loved one, we need to show mercy and compassion. We don’t always know the entire story, but what we do know is, there is a heart that is broken and barely holding on. They do not need others to bite and devour them. We will not only destroy them, but we also will destroy ourselves with a hard heart.
Lord, I am reminded of a simple rule. Love your neighbor as yourself.
