Thoughts Under the Umbrella

Psalm 19:7-11   “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul.  The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.  The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart.  The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes.  The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever.  The ordinances of the Lord are sure and altogether righteous.  They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb.  By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.”

In my bathroom I have created for myself a little work station, or as my husband refers to it, the place where the magic happens.  It is where I start my day trying to restore what the locust has eaten.  As I glance in my mirror, age and sun have slowly transformed my youthful look into the face of my grandmother.  I loved my grandmother, but I never thought one day I would look like her.  I am so thankful for the concealers, creams and other products I have in my magic kit that hide and cover all my barnacles.  When I am through, some of the damage has disappeared.  There are some things though that not even magic can erase.  I often will joke with my husband and say, “It only took me an hour to look this good.”  He kiddingly (I hope he is kidding) replies, “You might want to go back and work a little more magic.”  We can do all the doctors advise us to do to stop the aging process.  We can eat healthy, stay out of the sun, drink plenty of water and get our rest, but eventually the aging process will take over.

Age has a way of destroying our physical body.  It happens ever so slowly from the day we are born.  Our body starts breaking down from day one.  God’s law on the other hand has a way of doing just the opposite.  It ever so slowly transforms us.  As we grow more mature in His Word, we see it can revive us and restore us.  He can make us wise beyond our years.  He will bring us so much joy that even in our old age; others will view us as young at heart.  He will make us radiant and give light to our eyes.  It is in His Word where God’s magic takes place in our lives.  So I question myself, where am I spending most of my mornings preparing for my day?  I know the Lord wants us to take care of our physical needs and to put our best face forward. I think sometimes I spend more time in the room where I perform the magic instead of the quietness of my prayer room where the Lord does his magic.  There is that old saying, “Beauty is only skin deep.”   With time spent in the prayer room of the Lord, the beauty that He transforms within will shine brightly; that kind of beauty will last through eternity.

Lord, though our body ages we know that our inner being grows younger when we mature in your Word.
