Thoughts Under the Umbrella

Psalm 37:4 "Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart."

My brother-in-law is a California highway patrol officer. One day he was sharing with us about an accident he had been called out on. It was a very serious accident. My daughter Katie asked him if anyone had survived. He proceeded to tell us that if the person survived, they would probably not be able to live a normal life. My daughter had a way of getting her words mixed up. In her confusion she said, "If that were me, I would rather die than be a potato." We all looked at each other trying to figure out exactly what she was trying to say. My brother-in-law started laughing when he realized what she was thinking. What she meant to say was she would not want to be a "vegetable." She had mixed up vegetable with a couch potato! Little did I know how those words would come to bring me so much comfort. When the time came to take my daughter off life support, my husband took my hand and said, "Remember Katie did not want to be a potato." I realized on that day, the Lord gave Katie the desire of her heart and if I am honest with myself, He gave me the desire of my heart because I would not want her to be a potato either.

Lord, my daughter knew she did not want to live her life like a potato. She did not want to just exist; she wanted a full life. We each have a choice to make each day. Are we going to just exist or are we going to trust in You and lead the life You have planned for us, a full and victorious life.
