The Desires of Our Heart

Psalm 37:4 -5  “Take delight in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him and He will do this.”

Do you ever wonder if you will ever have the things you really desire? When I first read this scripture, I thought it was telling me that God would give me everything I ever wanted if I trusted in Him. As I became a seasoned Christian, I came to the understanding that God puts the desires in my heart that He wants me to have and then He fills those desires when I trust in Him, when I wait on Him, when I delight in Him to do everything He has promised He would do. Do you ever wonder what God’s will is? Scripture tells us that He puts His will into our hearts, but how often do we try with our own strength to do His will and to fulfill our own destiny? Hebrews 10:36 says, “Patient endurance is what you need now so you can continue to do the will of God. Then you will receive all that He has promised.”  Waiting on God’s promises with patient endurance is not always easy.

“If anyone wants to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God.” (John 7:17). After the death of our child, I put a fleece out to the Lord. I wanted to spend more time with my husband who had retired the year before and who had not been doing very well at home since I had gone back to work.  I knew the Lord had put it on my heart to pour into my marriage and into my family, and so I asked for a tiny bit of time off, so I could spend more time with my husband. I had been waiting on the Lord to grant the request of His maidservant, because I knew that my husband needed me and so did my son. What happened blew me away. In His time, God not only granted my request, but within two years after my request, through a series of circumstances, I left my job and started a new job where I now only work four days a week. God has given me more time to be with my husband than I ever hoped for and God has worked out my schedule so that I have a four day weekend every other week. Not only am I able to spend more time with my husband, but we are able to travel to Colorado on a regular basis to see our children and grandchildren.

Matthew 11:28-29 says, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Most of us struggle greatly in our lives to make things happen that not only God has put on our hearts to have, but that only He can bring about. God knows exactly what we need and He puts those desires in our hearts and He wants us to come to Him when we are weary and burdened, when our hearts are heavy laden and when we are struggling. He is waiting to grant the requests He has laid upon our hearts and He has promised to give us more abundantly than we ever could have hoped, dreamed or imagined. “The Lord is wonderfully good to those who wait for Him and seek Him.” (Lam. 3:25)
